The term “outlaw” refers to people who exist outside of the law.  That’s to say that they do not bind themselves according to laws, but rather live unrestricted lives, guided only by their personal moral codes.  In fact, a vigilante or noble bandit is just as much of an outlaw as an unrepentant criminal or downright evil highwayman.  In the end, this great variation only helps fuel the popularity of outlaw costumes.

Outlaw costumes can take on many styles and forms, since outlaws have existed throughout all time periods of human existence.  For example, during the medieval times, the most fabled bandit – perhaps the most well known noble outlaw of all time – was Robin Hood.   Robin Hood was a man who stole from the rich and gave to the poor while keeping some to maintain his free lifestyle along with his circle of loyal friends.   He is often portrayed wearing functional hunting gear for his time period: a shirt, tights, boots, hat, and a sword at the side.  Of course, he also carried a longbow and his feats with it claiming even more fame for him. After the Dark Ages a new age of innovation and exploration came about.  As the countries of Europe began colonizing places around the world, they discovered riches beyond measure.  Of course, where there’s treasure, there are those looking to steal it.  It could be argued that the colonizers were those thieves mentioned, but we are referring more towards a new breed of outlaws.  That’s right – pirates!  Pirates were the outlaws of the high seas, and thus pirate costumes are qualified outlaw costumes.  From the relative finery worn by pirate captains to the threadbare rags that adorned lowly deck swabs, pirate costumes are a rich tradition.

When colonizers reached Northern America and developed communities there, the concept of the outlaw was reinvented once more.  During the colonization stage, outlaws took the form of raiders swooping down on either colonial or native communities to steal resources and wreak havoc.  Some of these outlaws were natives, while others were colonials.  As time passed by, the country that would eventually become the United States of America began to flourish.  As wealth grew, so did the temptation for outlaws.

If there is one outlaw that exemplified the outlaws of the Wild West, then it would have to be Jesse James.  He and the other members of the gang robbed stagecoaches, trains, banks, and even fairs, but they were known for shunning bloodshed.  At many times they actually acted particularly menacing, as if to ham it up for the bystanders.  They were flagrant violators of the law, yet they held popularity as well as they did infamy.  If one were to put together a Jesse James costume, then it would consist of common horse riding gear at the time, complete with pistols and bullets, as he was indeed a bandit.

Moving on, we have the gangsters from the 1920’s onward.  Al Capone and other Mafiosi were outlaws as far as their activities were concerned, and the only real reason the police could not come down on them was a lack of evidence.  Dressing up as these more modern outlaws usually revolves around suits and coats, much like what we wear to work today.

In the future, outlaws of a different sort may rise, if sci-fi and cyberpunk novels are to be believed.  You can let your imagination run wild here.  Will you dress up as the renegade hacker who wears his tools on his person, or maybe the space pirate who works for no one but himself?

Whatever kind of outlaw you want to dress up as, whether you are a kid or an adult, you can be sure that what you need is available. Simply start looking for the components to your very own outlaw costumes!
